FGV and IDB organize 2nd Regional Meeting of the Project Big Data for Sustainable Urban Development

The 2nd Regional Meeting of the Project “Big Data for Sustainable Urban Development” was held by Fundação Getulio Vargas and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on December 4th and 5th. During the event, the attendees were presented with the project outline and its partial results. Moreover, the developments in the area of open data in Peru were presented, specifically in Miraflores, which hosted the Meeting. In addition to the Peruvian municipality, the project includes the cities of Montevideo (Uruguay), Quito (Ecuador), São Paulo (Brazil) and Xalapa (Mexico).

On that occasion, representatives of the cities participating in the project were able to interact with each other and with the other parties engaged in the project. Further, the host city and country had the opportunity to present what has been achieved at the municipal and federal levels in terms of open data and local projects aimed at sustainable urban development.

Subsequently, private sessions were held with the presence of city representatives, FGV experts, and invited researchers, in order to ensure further project development. There was also a technical and practical presentation on the use of data from Waze, technical partner of the project.

The event was attended by various officials including Luis Molina Arles (Mayor of Miraflores), Rodrigo Baena Soares (Ambassador of Brazil in Peru), Luiz Marfil (Counselor of the Brazilian Embassy in Peru), Eva García Fabre (Ambassador of Ecuador in Peru), Francisco Purificatti Gamarra (Minister of the Embassy of Uruguay in Peru), Tania Hernández Peña (Responsible for Economic, Commercial, and Tourism Promotion at the Embassy of Mexico in Peru) and Donny Dick Chumpitaz Maldonado (Leader of the “Geo Perú” Platform from the Secretary of Digital Government of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers). Also present were Mauricio Bouskela (IDB Specialist) and Professor Michelle Rodriguez Serra (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the Universidad del Pacífico).

In addition, the following representatives of FGV participated in the Meeting: professor Goret Pereira Paulo (Director of the Applied Research and Knowledge Network), Pablo Cerdeira (Coordinator of the Technology and Development Center), Marcus Mentzingen de Mendonça (Coordinator of the Project “Big Data for Sustainable Urban Development”), and professors Jorge Poco (FGV EMAp) and Ivar A. Hartmann (FGV Law School in Rio de Janeiro) participated. Also joining the team were research coordinator Patrícia Alencar Silva Mello (FGV CEPESP), associate professor Alessandro dos Santos Faria (FGV CEPESP) and Hugo B. Barreto (CTD Data Scientist).

What contributed to the success of the event was the fact that all the representatives invited from the cities participating in the project - Miraflores, Montevideo, Quito, São Paulo and Xalapa - were able to attend the Meeting. They not only participated in every scheduled activity, but also effectively integrated their ideas in the design thinking sessions, focused on the continuous project development, in an interactive and participative way, which allowed the team to achieve the objectives of these activities.
